Multnomah Falls Today
Heres a real quick, rather unedited shot from my drive in the gorge today. I had been whining all winter about how hard it was to get a shot of the falls with the sun on it. Well today, I finally got my chance. I'll probably clean this one up a little more.
Red Tailed Hawk
Here are some shots of a local Red-Tailed Hawk that has been hanging out in the area near the old rail trestle that crosses McLoughlin Boulevard at the end of River road. Theres a Bald Eagle that has just moved into the area and I plan on getting some shots in of him soon as well.
Portland Skyline, Portland Spirit and the Hawthorne Bridge
Yes, another shot of the Portland skyline from my favorite vantage point near OMSI. In this photo you see the Portland Spirit as it approaches a raised Hawthorne Bridge. I wish that I had the presence of mind to make my exposure as the boat passed under the bridge, but maybe I'll get that one next time.

Faux Scale Model Portlandia
I was fortunate enough to be working in an office building downtown that was being renovated, on my last day there, I brought my camera with me to get a different perspective of Portlandia that most folks don't get to see. I also played with the photoshop filters to create this fake scale model look.

I was going through the images I had taken and I noticed that the sign being carried by the guy in the sunglasses reads, "how many will die for your gastank?". I thought that the sign, combined with the Porsche in the foreground (not exactly the most fuel-efficient vehicle) made an interesting image.

Took this shot today at sw 9th and Salmon, dowtown. Today was a real overcast day and light was horrible for taking photos. However I did run into this sculpture on the side of a building that I liked, so here it is.
Fake Tilt-Shift Images Using Photoshop
Heres an old image of Crown Point I took a while back. I recently read a tutorial about how to make some images look like they were scale models instead of actual places. The technique I read about is supposed to simulate an expensive tilt/shift lens using photoshop filters instead. I don't know how effective it is, but I'm having fun experimenting with it. What do you think? Did I turn Crown Point into a scale model or does it just look blurry to you?

I'm addicted to the process of making faux infrared film images. I'm pretty happy with this one.
Multnomah #2
Another reworked image. I was really at a disadvantage by the time I got to Multnomah Falls, I realized I was running out of room on my 1 gigabyte memory card so I switch from recording my images from RAW/JPG to just JPG. While I was able to take more exposures by not recording them in RAW format, I also limited myself with what I was able to do in post-processing. So all my Multnomah Falls images are in JPG only. Fortunately I was able to clean them up in Photoshop so they looked pretty good.
Wahkeenah Falls Reworked
A rework of my Wahkeenah Falls image. I used the magic wand tool to select the green area around the falls as well as the log and increase their exposure by +1 and +2 respectively. I also bumped up the green color levels a smidge. I also used the 'curves' and the 'color sampling' function to help me get accurate color correction for this image. Enjoy!
Latourelle Falls
Latourelle Falls. It was about 25 degrees when I took this photo. With the wind chill factored in, the temp was probably closer to 10-15 degrees. Brrrr!
Multnomah Falls on Ice
Heres a shot of Multnomah Falls from earlier today. As you can see our recent cold temperatures have allowed for the formation of a nice layer of ice around the falls. I spent a good part of my day today hiking up to Latourelle, Bridel Veil, Wahkeena, Multnomah and Horsetail Falls. All of them iced over! More pics to come.
Dream Forest
I took this shot last month near Silver Creek Falls outside of the town of Silverton, Oregon. In this photo I'm using a faux infra-red technique that I picked up in the latest issue of "Photoshopuser" magazine. I particularly like the effect here on this image of ferns in a ravine. I'll probably be playing with these photoshop filter effects more in the future. Enjoy!

Some Kinda Little Monkey (Pygmy Marmoset)
Heres a shot of a monkey at the Oregon Zoo. I can't remember what species it was though. I'm a little disappointed with this photo, as I was focusing through glass and I inadverdently focused on the monkeys shoulder instead of his face, so his face is just a little out of focus. However, the lighting and the composition were appealing to me, so I'm posting it. EDIT: Ah ha! Its a Pygmy Marmoset!
Goodbye Andrea
Pictured above is quite possibly the very last photo that any zoo visitor has taken of Andrea, the Oregon Zoo's rare Amur Leopard. A short while back, Andrea's veterinarians discovered that she had inoperable cancer that had spread aggressively throughout her body. I took the photo yesterday, as the zoo was closing and most people were hurrying to get to the gates. Cassandra and Bryson and I stopped by to see if we could see her and she was sleeping right next to the glass where the visitors could see her, in a sheltered area that I assume resembles a cave. What is striking about her exhibit was that visitors could literally be within inches of her, separated by a thin glass wall. With her at the same level as you are, within this alcove that could accomadate maybe 2 people at a time, this made for an extremely intimate visit with a big cat. Yesterday, while Cassandra was walking with Bryson I stayed for about 5 minutes with this cat, just looking at her, just the two of us. I already knew she was very, very sick but, even if I hadn't already known, one could look at her and see how thin she was and realize that she was not long for this world. I felt very sad, knowing that she was so sick and likely near death. I felt that I had to take some photos of her, knowing that she would soon be gone. So I snapped several pictures using a slow shutter speed, but they were too dark, I didn't want to disturb her with my flash, so I tried bouncing the flash off of the interior of the little hut I was in, but that just cast an odd reddish glow on her. Finally, I snapped off one image using a direct flash. Fortunately, this didn't disturb her sleep, but I felt bad for using my flash directly on her. The zoo says that there are only about 50 of these cats left in the world. Now there is one less. Andrea was euthanized today at the Oregon Zoo after she hadn't eaten for four days and was probably in too much pain to continue on much longer. We are all poorer for this loss.

Some work in the kitchen with milk and an eye dropper yielded some cool results. 1/200th of a second, F18, ISO 800, 54mm focal length. Captured and edited in RAW mode and transformed to jpeg. Enjoy!

Heres a series of images from the Dec. 10th WTO protest here in downtown Portland. The shots from top to bottom are: "Looking On" a photo of a motorcycle officer who is directing traffic as the march begins to proceed around downtown, "The Two Marches" this photo shows the ever-present bicycle cops who were shadowing the march to make sure nothing got out of hand, "Trouble Brewing" This is a shot of some of the anarchists who were gathering for the march, they didn't cause any trouble at the march, but I guess they ran afoul of the police at a separate demonstration being held at a downtown fur store.
#700 near the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry

#700 Comes Back
Here is a shot of the SP&S #700 steam locomotive as it returns from being stuck overnight on the rails near Oaks Bottom. From what I heard, the tracks that it was on yesterday and spread apart under the weight of the engine and a couple of the front wheels had come derailed from the track. The train is being used as part of a holiday train ride that is being given in cooperation with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.
Machinery such as this are really a marvel, with all the steam and the deep rumbling of a locomotive such as this, you almost get the feeling that its less a machine then it is some great beast rumbling up the tracks. Puffing and growling and screeching its way past in great bellows of smoke and steam. You get the sense of power barely contained as the very ground beneath your feet trembles and shakes with its passing. Truly a marvelous sight.

Hey! Nice Bike!
Heres a shot I took during the WTO protest downtown in Portland today. I really like this image not only because of the obvious differences between the police officer and the protestor, but that they were able to have an amicable conversation about their bicycles.
